Cross-Country Runners with Previous Experience with Advanced Footwear Technology Demonstrate Greater Performance Benefits

Runners with previous advanced footwear technology (AFT) experience demonstrated ~1.7-1.9% greater running economy benefits than those without prior experience running in AFT. This provides evidence that habituation to AFT may optimize race day performance benefits.

Sex-specific metabolic and biomechanical responses to advanced footwear technology

Accounting for the effects of running speed, female runners experienced greater metabolic benefits and changes in metatarsophalangeal joint mechanics in AFT compared to males, potentially due to how footwear characteristics scale with shoe size.

Biomechanical and Energetic Trends in Response to 8 Weeks of Training in Advanced Footwear Technology

Master's thesis project

Across two intervention studies, we observed that 8-weeks of biweekly use of Nike Vaporflys (VP) during hard running workouts resulted in habituation, with a significant ~1% increase in VP-induced metabolic benefits on average. Footwear-specific alterations in metatarsophalangeal kinematics and ankle kinetics consistent with habituation were observed, with no changes in metabolic benefits or footwear-specific mechanics observed in runners who were assigned to the traditional racing flat training group.
